Rocking Horse Plans For Free! – Is it possible?

March 26th, 2011 Ian No comments

Hey, Ian here. I think last time I wrote I had just come across a website that had loads of woodworking plans, but more importantly, it had some great rocking horse plans. I had wanted to build a rocking horse for my two girls but couldn’t find a decent set of rocking horse plans anywhere.

To cut a long story very short, I was able to find just the right set of plans for my rocking horse project and I have been busy building it ever since. In fact, I have built three. One for my girls, one for the granddaughter of a friend who had seen my first rocking horse, and the other one… well, I’ll tell you more about that in a minute.

I was so impressed with this site, and I think you will be too if you’re looking for a good set of plans from which to work, so I’m going to give you a brief review about it.

Positive Points

  1. All the plans, over 14,000 of them are instantly available to download.
  2. If you want a hard copy, on DVD for example, you can have one.
  3. Each plan has step-by-step instructions, a master blueprint, and a detailed materials list. That last point was very important to me because it drives me crazy if I start a project and then have to break off half way through because a vital bit of the puzzle is missing.
  4. Whatever woodworking project you’re thinking of doing, whether it’s a rocking horse, a bird table, or a shed, there is a plan here for you. I think I counted 105 different categories of project in all. Now can you see why I was like a little kid in a candy shop when I first found this site.
  5. In addition to the plans, there are a ton of instructional videos on various aspects of woodworking, and some of them walk you through specific projects. I must admit I have found these extremely useful and very addictive as a lover of woodwork.
  6. I knew I had found the right place when I came to this site but I was absolutely convinced when I saw there was a 60 day guarantee.

Negative Points

Can there be any negative points after I’ve raved about it so much? Well, yes, there are. There are two negative points, one of which I’ll show you how to overcome!

  1. The occasional plan, and I do mean occasional, I came across did not have a materials list with it. I told you how that drives me nuts. You could, quite easily, make up your materials requirements from the detailed drawings, but I would much rather it was supplied.
  2. Some people may think this is expensive.  I guess it depends on your viewpoint. However, read on and I’ll reveal why I built three rocking horses, and how that makes price a non issue.

How  to get your rocking horse plans for free.

Earlier on I mentioned that I made three rocking horses, one for my girls, one for a friend and the other one, I didn’t say why.

I built the third rocking horse to sell on Ebay.

My friend mentioned to me that these rocking horses are selling for a serious amount of money on Ebay and, particularly as this was more or less a custom build, it should sell for even more.

Now, I hadn’t had any experience of Ebay before and I must admit I left all the technical side to my friend, but what I can tell you is that by building those additional two rocking horses, I managed to recoup many times over the cost of buying those rocking horse plans.

May I make a suggestion? If you intend to undertake a woodworking project, buy these plans, make one or two extra units, sell them on, and your plans will be technically free.

And by the way, there’s even a book given away with the plans as a bonus which shows you how to start a woodworking business, if you’re so inclined. I’m just keeping mine as a lucrative hobby.

Oh, and one last thing. When you visit the site, use the search facility to look for your desired plans. You’ll thank me for it!  J

Wooden Rocking Horses That Aren’t Horses!

March 11th, 2011 Ian No comments

When I was researching rocking horse plans, I came across a few “Rocking Horses” that were not actually horses. No, there were several different animal themed rockers and more than a few motorbikes.

Don’t be put off if some of these sound complicated. It’s true that they may take a little longer than a horse to produce and some may be a bit more intricate, but as long as you have a decent set of woodworking plans from which to work, you should have no problem at all.

You won’t require any extra tools, just the ones you’ve already got. So, if you have children that are more into dogs than horses then fire up the internet, log into the best resource of woodworking plans on the planet and find yourself a rocker that will make your child the envy of his friends.

Just on a personal note, my favourites are the motorcycle theme rockers, particularly the Harley’s. I think this is probably more to do with the thought of riding one of them across country than how exquisite they look. But they do look good.

Lillian Uncovers Clues To Rocking Horse Plans Motherload

March 10th, 2011 Ian No comments

Hi there, It’s Ian again.

For the basic woodworking projects I can get along pretty well with the plans I’ve already got, but for a project like a rocking horse that requires a touch more artistic flair or any level of intricate detailing, I definitely need some help. This is why it was absolutely essential that I source some good wooden rocking horse plans.

I mentioned in the previous post that I had come across some free rocking horse plans, but these were, to put it politely, absolute garbage. There were no detailed shopping lists, no expanded sections of intricate areas and, to top it off, the finished product that they displayed looked like the plans… garbage. It was most definitely nowhere near the image I had in my mind of what I wanted to build.

I happened to mention my intended project to my mother-in-law one Sunday when we were round for dinner, as I was hoping she would store the rocking horse out of sight of the girls whilst it was being built. To be honest, I thought it had gone in one hearing aided ear and out the other, but what my mother-in-law did next will stay with me till I go to the great wood workshop in the sky!

After we had cleared up from dinner, Lillian, the mother-in-law, disappeared off for five minutes and came back with several large sheets of paper rolled up, and tied with a little blue ribbon. As she unfolded them it became clear that they were woodworking plans and finally, when they were all completely unfolded I recognized the design as a coffee table that my father-in-law had made us a few years before he passed away.

“Are these any good to you?”, Lillian said.

Any good? These were brilliant!

It transpired that my father-in-law, Bob had downloaded these from a site on the internet. Now, I wasn’t aware that Bob even knew what the internet was, let alone be able to operate a computer and download things for heavens sake! And why hadn’t he shown them to me?

Turns out that he couldn’t operate a computer but had been talking to one of his pals at the social club and he got his grandson to download these plans for him. And he didn’t tell me because he wanted us to think that he had made the coffee table without any outside assistance at all. Bless him.

I can’t tell you how excited I was, these plans were superb, and what was even better was that the website address was printed at the bottom of each of the sheets. I jumped on Lillian’s computer and with a mixture of nervousness and excitement I typed in the website address.

It had been 2 years since Bob had died, and he’d made the table a couple of years before that. Was the site still going to be there?

The site came up and I was like a kid in a candy store. The search for my wooden rocking horse plans was on…

Mother-In-Law Guides Me To Great Wooden Rocking Horse Plans

March 9th, 2011 Ian No comments

Hey fellow woodworkers, it’s Ian here. I have very fond memories of playing with a wooden garage that my dad made for me as a kid, and I wanted to give the gift of similar memories to my girls. I didn’t think they would appreciate a garage so I decided I would make them a wooden rocking horse. I’m okay at woodworking, not a master craftsmen or anything, so I knew I would need to buy some decent wooden rocking horse plans.

I searched through my woodworking books and a couple of magazines that I had but couldn’t find anything that I was happy to work with. As I said I’m a competent woodworker but no genius so the rocking horse plans I bought had to be comprehensive and easy to work with.

I came across some free rocking horse plans on the internet but they were next to useless, they just didn’t give me the confidence that the finished rocking horse would be substantial, long lasting and, most importantly, safe, for my girls.

It really was a very frustrating time but I wasn’t about to give up easily as I was determined to create these memories for my girls. Surprisingly enough, my breakthrough came from a very unusual source… the Mother-in-law!
